Current Projects

  • Demonstration Hybrid engine : A small-scale hybrid engine, able to sit on a table, for demonstrations to faculty, interested members, and can be taken to events. This engine will help us gain publicity and awareness of the opportunities BYU Rocketry and Propulsion Research provide
  • Flight Tank : A pressure tank to hold oxidizer for hybrid rocket flights. Commercial tanks are both heavy and hard to integrate in a rocket, so Propulsion Research is designing, developing, and building an in-house tank. This will enable higher mass flow rates, improved filling and venting, and integrated body tube mounts for mating with rockets
  • Flight computer system: Countdown and ignition sequence for hybrid rockets must be carefully controlled and precisely timed. BYU Propulsion is developing a lightweight flight computer to gather data, monitor engine systems, control venting, ensure safety, and ignite the engine, all from onboard the rocket itself
BYU Propulsion Research - Static Fire 1

First Static Test This Year - September 2024

With the final design review for the hybrid engine scheduled for August, the first static fire of this year in a series of tests will occur in September. The 300lbf engine is the first flight capable hybrid engine at Brigham Young University after years of research and development.
